Mumbai: The Congress party has formally put forward its claim for the Leader of Opposition (LoP) post in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, signaling a strategic political move ahead of crucial civic polls.
According to senior Congress insiders, the party has already submitted an official letter to the Legislative Council chairperson Ram Shinde, nominating MLC Satej Patil for the LoP position. The letter, which carries the signature of state Congress president Harshvardhan Sakpal, was handed over before Sakpal departed on an overseas trip. With the paperwork completed, the ball is now in Shinde’s court, and a formal announcement confirming Patil’s appointment is expected either this week or early next week.

In a parallel development, a high-profile Congress delegation held discussions with Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray at his residence on Monday. The meeting revolved around the LoP nomination and the broader electoral strategies for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. Importantly, this dialogue also touched on the potential electoral understanding between Uddhav Thackeray’s faction and Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), following the recent public rally where the Thackeray cousins appeared together and hinted at collaboration.

The Congress delegation that attended the meeting comprised senior leaders including legislative party leader Vijay Wadettiwar, veteran leader Balasaheb Thorat, and MLA Amin Patel. The group intends to brief the Congress high command in Delhi about the discussions before finalizing its course of action.
Currently, the Congress has an edge in the Legislative Council with eight members compared to Shiv Sena (UBT)’s six. This shift occurred after Ambadas Danve’s tenure as LoP came to an end on August 29, creating a vacancy for the position. With stronger numbers, Congress believes the LoP post rightfully belongs to them and is determined to secure it to strengthen their standing in the shifting political environment.

Speaking to reporters, Amin Patel confirmed that the talks with Uddhav Thackeray centered around the LoP claim as well as preparations for the BMC elections. On the sensitive issue of the UBT possibly aligning with the MNS, Balasaheb Thorat avoided making any direct public statement. He emphasized that deliberations are ongoing and that any final decision would rest with the central leadership of the Congress in Delhi.

Political analysts say the outcome of these discussions could significantly shape the dynamics of the forthcoming civic elections. The BMC has historically been a Shiv Sena stronghold for more than two decades, and every party views the election as a high-stakes battle. Congress’s push for the LoP role is widely seen as a tactical move to increase its bargaining power within the alliance framework and ensure that it remains a relevant player in the civic polls.

However, the possibility of Shiv Sena (UBT) forging ties with the MNS could create new challenges. Congress may find itself in an uncomfortable position if required to share electoral space with Raj Thackeray’s party, which has often had a turbulent relationship with the Congress in the past. Observers believe that this triangular equation could complicate alliance negotiations and alter the final seat-sharing arrangements.

The ongoing realignment of political forces has once again put Maharashtra politics under the spotlight. With municipal elections fast approaching, the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP factions within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance are under pressure to work out a cohesive strategy. At the same time, the ruling BJP and its allies are watching developments closely, preparing to exploit any fissures within the opposition camp.

As things stand, Congress’s firm stance on the LoP position signals its intention to not play second fiddle but rather demand its due share of influence. Whether this strategy pays off will depend largely on how negotiations unfold with Uddhav Thackeray’s faction and the potential role of Raj Thackeray’s MNS in the opposition camp. One thing, however, is clear—the BMC election will serve as a decisive test for all parties involved, and the race to build strong alliances has already begun.
