NASHIK: Senior NCP leader and minister Chhagan Bhujbal has suggested that there is a strong chance of an alliance between Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) specifically for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. "From the inputs I've been receiving, it appears that the Thackeray cousins — Uddhav and Raj — may form a pre-poll alliance, but only for the BMC elections. It's unlikely that such a coalition will extend to civic polls in other cities like Pune or Nashik," Bhujbal shared in a statement to the Times of India.

According to Bhujbal, it’s too soon to judge how this potential Sena (UBT)–MNS tie-up might impact the ruling Mahayuti alliance in Mumbai. However, he emphasized that the leadership of all three allies in the state government is already aware of these developments. He urged them to move swiftly and finalize their strategy, just as they had effectively done ahead of the previous assembly elections.

As a former two-time mayor of Mumbai, Bhujbal’s observations carry weight. He stated that the final decision regarding any pre-election alliance for the civic polls — including the all-important BMC — would ultimately rest with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar.

Recent public gestures have sparked speculation about a possible reconciliation between the Thackeray cousins. Both Uddhav and Raj addressed a joint rally in July, and Raj Thackeray visited Uddhav’s residence, Matoshree, to wish him on his birthday, indicating a thaw in their previously strained relationship. This possible collaboration is causing concern within the Mahayuti ranks. Some leaders believe that if the Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS join forces in Mumbai, it could sway a significant portion of the Marathi-speaking electorate in their favor. Such a scenario may pose a serious threat to the Mahayuti alliance's performance in the civic elections, particularly in the BMC, where regional identity politics have historically played a major role.

Bhujbal also spoke about the NCP's plans in Nashik, stating that they would ideally like to partner with both the BJP and Shiv Sena for the Nashik Municipal Corporation and Zilla Parishad elections. However, he added that if an alliance does not materialize, the NCP is prepared to contest independently. Preparatory efforts for the Nashik polls have already been set in motion by the local unit of the NCP.

As the BMC elections draw closer, the possibility of the two Thackeray factions joining hands adds a new dynamic to Mumbai’s political battleground. With strategic talks, shifting alliances, and voter sentiments all in play, political circles across Maharashtra are watching closely to see how this evolving situation unfolds.
