Mumbai: One week after conducting only half the vaccination centers in the city, BMC announced that all 132 vaccination centers will be operational from Monday. On Sunday, 1.5 million dosage covishields and 8,000 doses of covaxin vaccine were received. The current stock will last for three days, i.e. until April 28th.We received 1.5 million doses of cochlear shield vaccine.
All vaccination centers in Mumbai will be operational tomorrow,”said BMC Commissioner IS Chahal. However, BMC said vaccination may start late in some centers. On Sunday, BMC received 8,000 doses of covaxin. Because the current stock is very limited, Covaxin will only be available at selected centers for the second dose, Chahal added. BMC said on Friday that there was a severe shortage of vaccine supplies. On Saturday, 57 centers had stopped vaccination drives. BMC closed 94 vaccination centers in private and government hospitals due to insufficient vaccination stock. The 39 centers that operate on Sundays are only operational in the first half of the day. Many citizens who lined up for the first dose were asked to check later as priority was given to those coming for the second dose. Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar said BMC plans to deploy mobile vans in certain areas to ensure maximum coverage for the third phase of vaccination - for those over 18 years of age.
Earlier this week, Cabinet Minister Aditya Thackeray had asked the government to start vaccination centers in 227 election wards for the third phase. On April 23, BMC received 50,000 doses of cow shield and 1.1 lakh doses on April 20. The temporary closure from Monday has left private vaccination centers crowded with city centers. More than half of the city's private vaccination centers have suspended vaccinations since Monday.
The number of citizens who were vaccinated in one day dropped from 50,000 last week to 20,000-30,000. There are 132 vaccination centers in the city - 42 in municipal hospitals, 17 in government hospitals and 73 in private hospitals. Three new civic centers will be operational from Monday. As of Sunday, BMC had given two doses to 3.67 lakh people and the first dose to 18.69 lakh people.
