Construction work in Thane Creek under the ESZ, need Wildlife Board NOC
Requirement for no-objection certification will soon be obtained for all the infrastructure development activities which will come under the Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) of the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary (TCFS) from the National Board for Wildlife  (NBWL).

In the Development Plan (2034) of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) one more clause to this effect is also proposed to be added, stated the civic body circular which was dated on July 9, and accessed by HT on Friday. A letter to the Mumbai Municipal Commissioner by the Deputy Conservator of Forests (Thane), dated April 9, said that a nod is important from the NBWL for all the construction work which is to be done in the deemed eco-sensitive zone of 10 km around the TCFS boundary as this will require projects from Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs where the nod will become important.

The director of the environment group Vanashakti stated “This permission is just a formality according to the law, and it remains to be seen whether such a restriction will turn away development pressures at Thane Creek. “The 10 km zone is just a temporary measurement,” stated an official with the Forest Department,

He further stated that “The final notification of this proposal is hoped to be issued in August by the Union Environment Ministry. Immediately the notification arrives there will be no requirement of NOC for projects situated 10 km away from the wildlife board.”
