The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has chosen to scan and upload data of all birth and death certificates available in its archive from 1880 to 2017, as part of its digitisation initiative. While the majority of these documents have been scanned, BMC officials estimate that indexing the scanned data will take another year.

"The indexing of scanned data from records of Birth and Death Reports dating back to 1880 is required. In the budget for 2022-23, Rs 5.50 crore has been planned as a pilot project for the indexing of 50,000 records/reports "BMC Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani remarked (Health).

He continued, "By April 2022, we hope to have completed the pilot project of scanning and indexing the scanned records. Because the historical documents are so numerous, we decided to start from 1880. Citizens can obtain birth and death data from BMC offices across wards whenever they are ready."

In 2016, the effort to digitise birth and death data was first started. And the data was scanned in two stages. Certificates from 1998 to 2015 were to be uploaded in the first phase, and certificates from 1990 to 1998 were to be uploaded in the second phase. On January 1, 2016, the BMC began offering an online service for downloading birth and death certificates, utilising the Registrar General of India's Civil Registration System (CRS) software.

The data was uploaded to the CRS server in stages. However, after allowing citizens access to the CRS for a limited time, it was shu. After the BMC was notified by the Central Government of malpractices and exploitation of the digital facility, the CRS server was shut down in 2017. The central government contacted the local body after receiving allegations that people were downloading the death and birth certificates of others at random, according to civic officials.

Citizens would not be able to download records and certificates on their own this time; instead, they will be able to obtain birth and death records/certificates exclusively through BMC ward offices. The procedure of obtaining birth and death certificates, on the other hand, will be expedited, according to BMC authorities.
