Mumbai: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken a crucial decision ahead of the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. On Monday, the party appointed three-term legislator Ameet Satam (49) as the new Mumbai BJP president. With the civic polls expected to be held in December 2025 or January 2026, this appointment is being viewed as a significant political move.

After assuming charge, Satam declared that the safety and security of Mumbaikars would be the party’s top priority. “Mumbai continues to grow and transform, but alongside development, our foremost focus will be on ensuring the health, security, and overall well-being of its people,” he said. Satam also emphasized that infrastructure development, mobility, and affordable housing would remain at the core of his agenda. “The safety of Mumbaikars will be given equal weightage as progress. Our team will work tirelessly to ensure the BJP-led alliance secures victory in the upcoming civic polls,” he added.

Looking back at his political journey, Satam began as a corporator in Mumbai before stepping into state politics. He was first elected as an MLA from Andheri West in 2014 and has since retained the seat for three consecutive terms, earning the trust of the electorate. Born on August 15, 1976, Satam completed his graduation in Arts from Mithibai College and went on to pursue a Master’s in Management Studies (MMS) from the University of Mumbai.

Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis welcomed Satam’s elevation. “Ameet Satam is a leader who has a deep understanding of Mumbai’s pressing issues. He not only knows the problems but also how to execute innovative solutions. His leadership is marked by aggressiveness, meticulous study, and strong organizational ability. He has successfully shouldered many responsibilities within the party,” Fadnavis remarked. He further added, “In the 2024 assembly elections, BJP emerged as the number one party in Mumbai. I am confident that in the forthcoming civic polls, we will surpass our own record of 82 seats achieved in 2017 and set new benchmarks.”

Satam will now replace Ashish Shelar, who led the BJP’s Mumbai unit for three terms. Shelar was inducted into the Maharashtra cabinet in December last year, after which the position of Mumbai president fell vacant. Welcoming Satam’s appointment, Shelar described him as a “close friend, a true son of Mumbai, a young and dynamic MLA, and a leader with strong roots in the Konkan region.” Shelar expressed optimism that Satam’s organizational skills and grassroots connection would infuse fresh energy into the party’s Mumbai unit.

The upcoming BMC election has already captured the political spotlight, as it is not just a local body contest but a battle with state-level implications. For decades, the Mumbai civic body—considered Asia’s richest municipal corporation—has been seen as a gateway to political dominance in Maharashtra. Recognizing this, the BJP is preparing to fight the polls with full force. The choice of a young yet experienced leader like Ameet Satam reflects the party’s strategy of blending aggressive leadership with on-ground connect.

The BJP has already begun its groundwork for the BMC polls, determined to wrest control of the civic body. In the last election, the party performed strongly but fell short of a complete majority. Now, with the backing of the Mahayuti (Grand Alliance), the BJP is aiming to consolidate its position and secure a clear victory. Against this backdrop, Satam’s appointment is being seen as a morale booster that will galvanize both leaders and workers at the grassroots level.

With a clear focus on citizen safety, better infrastructure, and the organizational muscle of the Mahayuti, Satam’s leadership will play a decisive role in shaping the BJP’s campaign in Mumbai. His appointment marks not just a change of guard but also signals the party’s determination to capture the BMC and script a new political chapter in the city.
