Prepaid black and yellow cab stand at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) will finally reopen after 2.5 years. The stand was shut down throughout the Covid epidemic. The taxi unions allege that they are in discussions with the CR government about obtaining property for a taxi stand. At CSMT station, there were two big taxi stands: one close to P D'Mello and the other outside platforms 10-14.
The taxi unions claim that prepaid taxis would be available from CSMT very shortly. "We hope all concerns to be resolved in a month, and we will begin operating prepaid taxis from CSMT," said KK Tiwari, a taxi union head who was awarded the contract to operate prepaid taxis from CSMT prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Despite the fact that Covid-19 limitations have been lifted for more than 3-4 months, the prepaid taxi stand remains closed. Outside the CSMT station, there are well-lit indicators of prepaid taxis, but the system isn't in effect. This has been a problem for passengers disembarking at the CSMT Terminus, which serves several long-distance trains, both regular and special summer/ holiday trains. The pre-paid cab is mired in bureaucracy.
A three-year agreement was reached between the Commercial Department of Central Railways' Mumbai Division and Tardeo RTO in January 2020. According to CR sources, the RTO has been charged with the responsibility of nominating any third-party organisation to manage the prepaid taxi service at CSMT, which has yet to materialize but is expected shortly.
Prepaid taxis are a godsend for people and passengers arriving at train stations. Outside the New Administrative Building at CSMT, few taxis are waiting, but outside platform 18, which runs parallel to P D'Mello Road, taxis stand aimlessly and solicit fares. Although prepaid taxis are more expensive, transportation experts agree that the drivers will not defraud. The travel is monitored in terms of passenger safety, which makes it user-friendly as well.
