Despite the decision by Maharashtra Government, the
BMC has stated that the ward demarcation exercise will not be repeated because the civic body has already completed the process. The state's Urban Development Department sent a circular to poll-bound Municipal Corporations, including the BMC, on Monday, instructing them to begin the delineation process based on the population inside their boundaries.
The BMC spent Rs 27.10 crore on the ward demarcation procedure, according to information obtained through an RTI request.
Opposition members in the Shiv Sena-led BMC, on the other hand, have slammed the civic body for spending crores of rupees on the demarcation process when elections have yet to be announced.
Instead of creating a new draught, the Corporation will rely on the two previous draughts, according to the BMC. "We now have two ward demarcation draughts; the first is the one we submitted to the election commission for approval in December. After hearing comments and objections, the second draught was created" Suresh Kakani, BMC's Additional Commissioner, agreed.
As a result, no new draughts will be made because repeating the exercise from the beginning would be inappropriate, he explained, adding that the number of wards will remain at 236 as recently decided.
The final decision on which of the two draughts will be forwarded will be made in the meeting with BMC Chief Iqbal Singh Chahal. The state government nullified the ward demarcation processes done by other local organisations as well as the BMC in the last assembly session, claiming that a fresh ward demarcation process will be completed under the BMC Act.
