Uddhav Thackeray, the Maharashtra Chief Minister, and Dilip Walse Patil, the Maharashtra Home Minister, launched 91 Nirbhaya Squads in Mumbai on Wednesday. The Mumbai Police has established a new division to combat eve-teasing and harassment of women in the city.
These squads will be made up of professionally trained female and male officials who will be stationed around Mumbai 24 hours a day, seven days a week, according to Maharashtra Tourism and Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray. He noted that people can get help right away by dialling 103.
Aaditya Thackeray took to Twitter to say: "CM Uddhav Thackeray Ji and Home Minister @Dwalsepatil Ji launched 91 Nirbhaya Squads across the city, reiterating their commitment to women's protection. This fearless police force is a reflection of Mumbai's fearless women!"
"It is made up of carefully trained female and male cops who are stationed around Mumbai 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can get help right now by dialling 103. Special rest rooms have been designated under this effort to guarantee a safe working environment for female cops" Added he.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, speaking virtually at the event, said the Maharashtra government will try to make the state the "saviour" of women in India and beyond the world. Maharashtra, according to Thackeray, has always revered and appreciated women.
"We (the administration) will try to ensure that Maharashtra is renowned as the world's saviour of women, not just in India. Maharashtra is known as a 'Shakti Pujak' (worshipper of female power) "he stated. He stated that the Nirbhaya squad will secure the safety of women in various fields so that they do not feel helpless.
"Women must be protected. We'll also beef up the police force "Added he. Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil, citing statistics, stated that cases of violence against women are on the rise, which is concerning given the large number of women employed in the public sector.
He further stated that the perpetrator is known to the family of the victim woman in roughly 80% to 90% of occurrences, but it is depicted that crimes against women are on the rise in Maharashtra and that Mumbai is unsafe for women.
