The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested two Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) engineers for allegedly seeking a payment from the owner of an automobile spare parts shop in exchange for permission to erect a shed in a common area of a building during the monsoon season. During the office search of one of the engineers' quarters, the ACB sleuths uncovered and seized unaccounted for cash worth Rs 17.64 lakh from the office drawer.

The accused BMC engineers have been identified as Amol Thavil (39) and Dattatraya Mane (36) of the Buildings & Factories Department of the BMC's D-ward in Nana Chowk. According to the ACB, the complainant, the owner of an automobile spare parts company, claimed in his complaint that Mane sought a bribe of Rs 2 lakh in exchange for granting him permission to construct a monsoon shed in a common area of a building. The complainant, who did not want to pay the bribe, filed a formal complaint with the ACB on June 21. On July 1, Mane and Thavil allegedly demanded another bribe from the complainant and settled for Rs 1.90 lakh.

Mane was caught red-handed taking a bribe of Rs 1.90 lakh from the complainant at his workplace on Monday. Thavil, who also played an active role in the crime, was later apprehended by the ACB squad. During the office search of Thavil's cabin, ACB sleuths recovered and seized unaccounted for cash worth Rs 17.64 lakh from the office drawer. The accused public workers have been charged under Section 7 of The Prevention of Corruption Act (public servant receiving gratification other than legal remuneration in connection with an official act).
