It was today that the Environment Minister of Maharashtra Aaditya Thackeray visited the Maharashtra State Power Generation Ltd's Nandgaon fly ash dump in Nagpur on Monday. He also told officials to remove the fly ash dumping pipeline as soon as possible and clean up the area where the ash is being discharged.

"We had received complaints in Nandgaon about pollution caused by fly ash disposal, and I had also seen films documenting the situation. But I needed to go to the field and assess the situation "According to Thackeray. After taking stock of the situation today, we ordered that the fly ash dumping pipeline be removed immediately, and the ash dump site be cleared. Electricity is required, but we will take precautions to ensure that the environment is not affected "Added he.

Thackeray's visit to the area had been rescheduled for last Monday since the government had proclaimed a public holiday in honour of famed vocalist Lata Mangeshkar's death. A delegation from the Maharashtra Environment Department visited the villages affected by the dumping of fly ash and ash slurry from the Khaparkheda plant after receiving repeated complaints from the area. Following that, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) issued an order to KTPS to halt disposing of and dumping ash slurry into the Nandgaon ash pond, which is roughly 20 kilometres to the north-east.
