On Thursday, a resident assaulted a
BMC employee collecting property taxes in the Fort neighbourhood. At MRA Marg police station, an FIR has been filed against the resident. Dashrath Gharwade, a civic employee, works at A-tax ward's assessment department. He has been calculating and collecting taxes in the area since 2020. He was beaten up by the owner on March 23, when he went to slap a notice on a building and the defaulter's car.
The accused, Ashwin Kumar Shah, owns three buildings on Ambalal Doshi March, Hamam Street, and the Fort. Shah has not paid any property tax for the previous ten years, according to the FIR, and his outstanding debts total Rs 43.76 lakh. Shah had received two warnings from the BMC in June and September 2021 instructing him to pay his taxes, but he ignored them.
Gharwade and three of his coworkers went to one of the buildings on Wednesday and posted the notes on the doors of 19 flats. According to the letter, sewer lines would be severed if the tax is not paid within 48 hours. The BMC employees then placed the notice on Shah's automobile, clamping a tyre in the process.
Looking at February BMC had collected 3,860 crores. Last year, the BMC collected over 5,000 crores in property tax for the first time in its history. In 2017-18, the Assessment and Collection Department collected 5,132 crores in property tax, compared to a target of 5,402 crores, a 285-crore increase over the previous year.
After providing them with a notice, the BMC offers defaulters 90 days to pay their property taxes. After that, the water supply is turned off. If property owners fail to pay after their properties have been attached, the BMC can auction the property within 21 days.
