With the outbreak of the Coronavirus, authorities have made wearing a face mask mandatory in public to curb the spread of the infection. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday released data stating that till now it has collected more than Rs 59 crore as fines from people not wearing masks in public places since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The amount has been collected from April 2020 till July 2021 according to the municipal corporation. As stated in the official figures till July 8, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has collected a fine of Rs 59,82,42,200. This hooping amount is all-inclusive of the fines collected by the Mumbai Police and the Railways as well.
A fine of Rs 200 is charged by the
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to the citizens who don’t wear a mask. As the rule is applicable, a total fine of Rs 51,38,45,400 has been collected by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Mumbai Police has redeemed a fine of Rs 7,93,57,600 and 50,39,200 has been collected from people who have been traveling on Central, Western, and Harbour railway lines.
The civic body had made it compulsory to wear masks in public places last year. Meantime, 540 new Covid 19 cases have been recorded on Thursday, taking the total number of active cases to 7,714 with 13 deaths in the last 24 hours. The growing number of cases of the metropolis has reached 7,26,824 and the death toll to 15,586.
