BMC News: BMC Completed 36 Percent of the Coastal Road Project Work in Mumbai
Till date, 36 percent of the coastal road project has been completed stated Mumbai’s civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Saturday. A 10.58-kilometer stretch that starts from Marine drive and goes up to Bandra Worli ceiling is expected to be ready by July 2023. Much of coastal road is being built on land reclaimed from the sea. Overall, the project is 36 percent completed.

The road includes complex interchanges, road bridge parks, and promenades. The most challenging segment is the 2.7 Kilometres stretch from Marine drive to Priya Darshani Park where the road will run a kilometre or so under the sea through a set of twin tunnels. The undersea road tunnel which will pass through the Arabian sea will be the first of its kind in India. The project estimated to cost Rs 12,721 crores will reduce the time from Marine drive to Worli to 10 to 12 minutes from the existing 45 minutes. Fuel consumption is also likely to come down by 35 percent.

"Chanting the slogan 'Happy Journey, Free Breath', completion of 36 percent of the work has been done. The work of 'Coastal Road' is going on continuously!" said Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. The work of the project was on hold by the Bombay High Court in April 2019 on a bunch of petitions which were against this project, but later on, the Supreme Court approved it May 2019 as Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) requested in the apex court. The approval was given by the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority, Expert Appraisal Committee, and Ministry of Environment and Forest gave in 2017.
