In a boost for transparency, BMC has plucked the Centre’s Aadhar idea to give unique ids to all buildings with an 11-digit unique identification number.

Numbering the structures will simplify inquiry processes for citizens seeking information or making grievances, as all such details will be linked to the ID and made available online. This will boost transparency, as once the database is complete, it will yield specifics of a building — including plans, status of related complaints, breach of construction norms if any — at the click of a button.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, which has already started assigning the numbers, is likely to dole out number plates to all residential and commercial societies by the end of this month. The plaques will have to be arrayed prominently on the facade.

“Each building will get an 11-digit number unique to it. This will help us track the status of buildings and redress complaints, making the entire process more transparent and quick,” said the brain behind the project, assistant municipal commissioner Parag Masurkar, K-West ward, that is, Andheri.

BMC has already introduced software, called the Auto-DCR, to examine height, width and length of flats, stairs, lobby, refuge area and open area among other details. Builders have been asked to review building proposal files with the help of this approved programme before submitting them. This will check graft by minimising developer official interaction.
