Shiv Sena (UBT)

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), commonly referred to as the UBT faction of Shiv Sena, is a regional political party in Maharashtra, recognized by the Election Commission of India. It was formed following a major split in the original Shiv Sena party in 2022, when a large group of MLAs led by Eknath Shinde broke away. The faction led by Uddhav Thackeray, the son of party founder Balasaheb Thackeray, retained the ideological legacy of his father and positioned the party against the BJP-led government in the state.

This party primarily advocates Marathi pride, secularism, democratic values, and inclusive politics, with a more progressive image compared to the original hardline Hindutva stance.

Election Symbol of Shiv Sena (UBT)

The Election Symbol of the Shiv Sena (UBT), as allotted by the Election Commission of India, is the “Flaming Torch” (Mashaal). This symbol reflects resistance, light in the dark, and people’s power, emphasizing the party’s struggle against betrayal and injustice after the split in 2022. The party’s new flag often features saffron and white themes, along with images of Balasaheb Thackeray and the new symbol prominently displayed in rallies and posters.

Uddhav Thackeray, President and Chairperson: After the death of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray, his son Udhav Thackeray became the Karyapramukh of the party. He was handed over the post of Shiv Sena’s working president in 2003, when the party won the Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation Election in 2002. Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra (2019–2022), Uddhav led the MVA coalition government comprising Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress. After the party split, he continued to lead the original Sena ideology under a new identity.
Aditya Thackeray, President of Yuva Sena or youth faction of Shiv Sena: The grandson of Bal Thackeray, Aditya is the overarching youth leader of the youth wing of the party. The youth wing spreads not only across Maharashtra, but also in Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Jammu and Kashmir. First member of the Thackeray family to contest and win elections (MLA from Worli, Mumbai). Known for youth outreach and modern urban policies like climate action and infrastructure development.
Sanjay Raut, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha and Chief Strategist: Sanjay Raut is an Indian politician and a prominent leader of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) party. Sanjay Raut represents Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. He assumed office in July 2004 and was re-elected for his fourth term in 2022. His current term is set to expire in July 2028. He serves as the chief spokesperson for the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) party.
Arvind Sawant, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha: Arvind Sawant is an Indian politician and a member of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament. He is a Member of Parliament representing the Mumbai South constituency in Maharashtra. He secured his third consecutive term in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Represents the South Mumbai constituency and served as Union Minister of Heavy Industries in the Modi government until Shiv Sena exited NDA in 2019.
