Eknath Shinde, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, declared on Monday that a "Savarkar Gaurav Yatra" would be held in each district in the state. Rahul Gandhi, a leader in the Congress and an ex-MP, has made repeated assertions about Savarkar that Shinde has denounced. His declaration read, "I disagree with Rahul Gandhi's remarks against Veer Savarkar. He was very important to the nation's quest for independence. These warriors helped India gain its independence. The state will host the "Savarkar Gaurav Yatra."

In a press conference held last week after being removed from the House of Representatives, Rahul Gandhi declared that he would not apologize for the "Modi surname" controversy, for which he was sentenced to two years in prison by a Gujarati court because his last name was Gandhi and not Savarkar. Within Maharashtra's Shinde Fadnavis camp, which is currently in power, this had caused a commotion. Rahul caused controversy in the past on the "Bharat Jodo Yatra" when he asserted that Savarkar had expressed regret to the British. In a tweet on the impending yatra, Deputy Chief Minister Fadnavis also stated that the Shiv Sena will demonstrate against anyone who disparages Savarkar.
