With subway renovation plans stalled, pedestrians prefer crossing busy junctions

Since 5 months , the Public Works Department (PWD) is yet to renovate three subways at Kherwadi junction, Teacher’s Colony and Vakola. The PWD claims that the renovation proposal is awaiting a nod from the state government .

Local residents and commuters prefer to cross the road instead of using the subway which lacks adequate lighting and is dirty. Most of the times the lights are stolen and hence the subway remains dark and hence women avoid using it.

Santacruz (E) corporater Pooja Mahadeshwar has already complained to state HRD minister, Vinod Tawde, about the negligence on the part of the PWD. Citing security issues, especially for women who are forced to use the dark and dingy subways at night, Mahadeshwar has sought an enquiry into the delay in approval of the renovation project.

“I have filed a complaint with PWD long ago and have specifically raised the issue of women safety. However, I have received no reply from the department,” said Mahadeshwar.
