As the tension is increasing in between ruling BJP and their ally Shiv Sena over the issue of farm loan waiver, a brawl took place between two party cadres in the function held at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation headquarters. The function was held after the new Good and Services Tax rollout where the State Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar handed over a cheque of Rs. 647 crore to the municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta towards the state contribution for GST to the BMC.
BJP corporators started chanting ‘Modi..Modi..’ during the function to credit the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for GST implementation. But Sena corporators responded to the sloganeering with abusive slogans by adding ‘Chor hai.. Chor hai’ to BJP chants. This led to the war of words between the BJP and Sena corporators which soon turned into fight. BJP Colaba corporator Makarand Narvekar claimed that he was man-handled and pushed by Sena corporators during ruckus.
The fight took place right in front of Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and minister Munguntiwar but neither tried to calm their party supporters. BJP group leader Manoj Kotak commenting on this said, “Sena can’t digest the fact that we won 82 seats in the BMC. We will decide whether to approach the police after discussing the incident with our leadership.”
In reply to Narvekar’s allegation, Sena leaders said that our response” Chor hai” was for Lalit Modi and not for Narendra Modi. They also claimed that Narvekar made few comments about their idol late Bal Thackeray which unacceptable.
Senior BJP leader Mungantiwar commenting on this said, “I can understand enthusiastic corporators raising slogans for their own leader, but there should be no slogans which demean the alliance partners.”
